Marcos Cunha was shocked at the cost of making mobile calls home to Florida while on a European vacation in 2013. So he launched a company to do something about it.
Cunha founded a company called YouRoam Inc. that enables users to make international calls over the Internet by using their own mobile phones with Wi-Fi service. The startup, which employs eight workers, relocated to Austin from Miami in January. It now operates out of the Capital Factory downtown and plans to reach 3 million customers by the end of the summer, Cunha told Austin Business Journal.
“It’s way cheaper than all the alternatives out there,” he said. “In many ways it’s replacing your current phone and improving it through YouRoam.”
Cunha was previously the founder and CEO of Maverick Brothers, a Miami-based company that sold high-end stainless steel toothbrushes with replaceable heads sold on a monthly subscription basis. Before that, he was a private wealth manager in Miami for Goldman Sachs Group Inc., according to his online profile.
